Bring maths to life using hands, minds and bricks.
Our LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) workshops offer an innovative way to help students from K12 explore mathematics through hands-on, visual, and collaborative learning.
Designed specifically to address math anxiety and promote a growth mindset, the approach encourages students to see mathematical thinking not just as symbolic manipulation — but as something they can model, manipulate, and explain with clarity.
How we use LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® in classrooms?
Are you a math teacher or educator? We collaborate with primary and lower secondary schools (ages 9–14) to deliver engaging, hands-on experiences in mathematics.
Each 90-minute workshop is led by a certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitator, co-designed with educators and fully adaptable to your curriculum objectives and classroom needs.
#1 Making abstract concepts visible
Students build models to represent fractions, algebraic thinking, functions, and mathematical relationships — making abstract concepts visible, tangible, and accessible. For many students, especially those who struggle with traditional symbolic representations, abstract mathematical ideas can feel disconnected and intimidating. Manipulatives like LEGO® bricks provide a bridge between concrete experience and abstract reasoning.
#2 Embed growth mindset
Mistakes become visible learning opportunities; learners build, rebuild, and reflect. The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method supports a classroom culture where failure is reframed as exploration and thinking becomes visible. When students externalise their reasoning through physical models, they are more willing to test ideas, take risks, and revise their thinking, all essential components of a growth mindset.
#3 Promote Creativity
Through LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®, students build and explain models that reinforce reasoning, language, and mathematical communication. They learn to see maths not as fixed procedures, but as a creative, open-ended discipline where multiple strategies can coexist. This process encourages conceptual connections, flexible thinking, and a deeper understanding beyond right or wrong answers.
The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method is grounded in educational research demonstrating that hands-on, minds-on learning fosters deeper, more meaningful understanding — particularly in complex, abstract domains like mathematics. This approach is especially powerful in classrooms where learners benefit from making thinking visible and building understanding collaboratively.
At its core, LSP is a facilitated methodology designed to help individuals and groups explore challenges, share perspectives, and co-create solutions. It draws from systems thinking, organizational development, and neuroscience, treating learning not as passive absorption but as an active, embodied process.
We are proud to share that Clelia Rubino Academy is a Certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Facilitator, trained at University College Cork (UCC). Our practice combines this internationally recognized method with our experience in inclusive mathematics education helping students build not just models, but also confidence, communication, and critical thinking.
